Initial Professional Development – if you’re a graduate we’ll encourage you to join one of our Professional Institution accredited schemes. A mixture of work experience and off the job training courses will help you gain the competence to make a growing contribution to our business and gain formal Institution recognition. You’ll have a mentor assigned to help you with your development too.
Other types of trainees and entrants receive appropriate development including equivalent structured learning – this might include day or block release to acquire professional qualifications.
With a wide range of functions in our business there’s often the opportunity to spend periods of time in different areas to gain experience – for example, a site engineer might want design office experience – if business activity allows – we’ll try and fix it. |

Technical Development – In order that you can safely conduct your role, you’ll be given appropriate safety and technical skills training. Unless you’re particularly experienced when you join us, initially you’ll probably work in a team under supervision but you’ll be amazed how quickly you’ll be given real responsibility when you show a willingness and aptitude for new challenges. New roles will be accompanied by equipment or technical training to help you along.
Job Opportunities – new and more challenging roles are one way of providing ‘developmental stretch’ and such opportunities are regularly available in project environments – sometimes overseas - and of course working in Balfour Beatty Rail means access to career opportunities across the broader Balfour Beatty Group – a £5.9 Billion turnover, 30,000 employee blue chip organisation with a global presence and a terrific reputation.
