Training and Development

We have a number of successful programmes which are typically made up of work experience and off-the-job training as part of a Professional Institution training scheme. The three main programmes are:

Our engineering programmes are for graduates who already have an engineering background, with each accredited by the relevant institution.

Graduates who don’t already have a quantity surveying degree will complete a postgraduate course as part of their development programme. Combined with the relevant experience, these qualifications will ensure you fulfil the objectives set by the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors for gaining professional status.

This programme is primarily for graduates with a business background, giving you the opportunity to focus on the financial and operational delivery of the organisation. We also offer programmes in Safety, Health, Human Resources and Environment & Quality for graduates from a variety of degree disciplines. All our graduate programmes have been designed to give you the skills and expertise to become a future Senior Manager or Director. As well as ad-hoc courses and events, the first two years of your programme will consist of the following as a minimum:
Although courses are an important learning tool, we also like to develop our staff in other ways, including:

We actively encourage professional membership of relevant institutions and will pay for your annual membership subscription.
The following schemes are accredited by divisions within Balfour Beatty Rail Ltd:
Membership of other appropriate Institutions can of course be attained by conventional routes.

Typically all graduates will be allocated a mentor via membership of their accredited Professional Institution scheme.

We want all our graduates to reach their potential and achieve chartered status, which means there will sometimes be opportunities for secondments in other parts of the business.

As well as an annual formal review, we aim to ensure the performance of all graduates is reviewed on a quarterly basis within your professional training scheme.
