My Career
What made you join Balfour Beatty? On leaving school six years ago I took a temporary administrative job with Balfour Beatty Fleet Services for three months. I was taken on permanently and stayed with Fleet Services for 18 months, then to Specialist Services in another admin role for six months. I was transferred to TGS as Contract Delivery Manager 12 months ago.
What does your current role involve? We have a contract with Network Rail to supply on-track machines and crews for track maintenance and renewal. Basically it’s my responsibility to ensure machines and crews are in the right place at the right time. I also liaise with customers and deal with any issues that might arise.
What job skills do you have to contribute to your work? Highly organised, good communication and the ability to think outside the box.
Best/worst parts of your job? Best - contact with customers because I love to be around people; Worst – the travelling.
Are you involved in any social activities through your work? I often meet up former colleagues from Fleet Services for a night out, and my East Midlands team regularly enjoys going out for a meal.
Best career advice you have been given? Set yourself achievable goals.
What trait(s) do you admire in co-workers? To be a good team player.
What did you want to be when you were growing up? A teacher.
What would you like to be doing in five years’ time? Similar to what I’m doing now, but in a wider role that looks at the Network Rail contract as a whole.
