Richard Kirkham

What made you join Balfour Beatty?
I was studying for an electronic engineering degree at Nottingham University when I applied for a summer placement with Rail Technologies. I really enjoyed it and on obtaining my degree I joined the company full-time. I was especially attracted by the opportunity to take on responsibility within the rail industry, and the wide variety of the work.

What does your current role involve?
My work is quite varied but a typical week would involve meeting clients to sell our signalling products and providing quotations, managing products and people, maintaining the quality of our services to the client including after sales technical support and developing new products for railway signalling applications.

What job skills do you have to contribute to your work?
My experience of engineering maintenance, which I gained while working in Kent for two years at the start of my career with Balfour Beatty, has proved invaluable. I am also able to get on with people - my job is technical and very people-orientated.

Best/worst parts of your job?
Best: the variety of the work and the people I work with. We are very supportive of each other. Worst: There's so much to do and not enough time to do it in.

Are you involved in any social activities through your work?
I have recently run the London Marathon as part of a Balfour Beatty team.

Best career advice you have been given?
Balfour Beatty insisted I start out in maintenance to ensure I had a good grounding in the rail industry. It was the best thing I could have done.

What trait(s) do you admire in co-workers?
Their friendliness, and willingness to help each other out.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A surgeon, or an engineer.

What would you like to be doing in five years’ time?
I would still like to be working in signalling for Balfour Beatty, perhaps managing larger projects.

Sum up your feelings to the company/ your role or career choice.
Balfour Beatty is excellent to work for. There are a huge amount of opportunities within the group and, so far, I have found the company very supportive.
