My Career
What made you join Balfour Beatty? I was a cook in a residential home but got tired of working every weekend. I joined Balfour Beatty as a cleaner three years ago. The job also involved general maintenance work like painting. Then I was asked if I was interested in being a sideloader/forklift truck driver. My manager arranged for me to be trained in both and I successfully completed the courses.
What does your current role involve? Loading and unloading materials on to wagons. On a sideloader I handle rails as long as 90 ft. I load and unload many other items like pallets and concrete and wooden sleepers.
What job skills do you have to contribute to your work? The ability to adapt to a different working environment.
Best/worst parts of your job? Every day is different – and I love working outside in all seasons. There really are no worst parts.
What trait(s) do you admire in co-workers? I like them to be part of the team.
What did you want to be when you were growing up? To join the RAF and travel.
What would you like to be doing in five years’ time? What I’m doing now.
Sum up your feelings to the company/ your role or career choice Balfour Beatty offers the training that opens up new opportunities. It encourages its staff to try something new. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that one day I would be driving a forklift truck – but this was made possible for me.
