In addition to the above we have programmes for Safety, Health, Environment and Quality, and Human Resources Graduates.
The common theme with all our graduate programmes is that they have been designed to equip you with the skills and expertise needed to become a Senior Manager or Director of the future. In the first 2 years your programme will consist of the following learning events as a minimum:
- Balfour Beatty Rail Induction
- Balfour Beatty Group Induction
- Commercial Awareness
- Planning for Productivity
- Negotiation Skills
- Communication Skills
As well as the courses mentioned above you will go on ad-hoc courses and events necessary to fulfil the requirements of the role.
Although courses are an important learning tool we like to develop our staff in other ways, including:
Professional Scheme Accreditation We actively encourage professional membership of relevant institutions, as a business we will pay your annual membership subscription.
The following schemes are accredited by divisions within Balfour Beatty Rail Ltd:
- IMechE - Institution of Mechanical Engineering
- IET - Institution of Engineering and Technology
- ICE - Institution of Civil Engineering
- ICES - Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors
Mentoring All Graduates will be allocated a mentor, in most cases these will be professional mentors, who are automatically allocated to individuals as a result of them being on a professional development scheme.
Secondments We endeavour to give you the depth and breadth of experience that is needed in order for you to reach your full potential and achieve chartered status. In order to do this it sometimes means you being seconded to other parts of the business.
Personal Development Reviews These are carried out formally on an annual basis, however, we aim to make sure that all Graduates are reviewed on a quarterly basis.
M.E.R.I.T Competition This involves managing a simulation construction company and counts towards 2-3 days of Continuous Professional Development. We actively encourage new Graduates to take part in this competition.
It is important that you take responsibility for your own development. We can provide you with opportunities but we expect you to want to learn and to take full advantage of the opportunities provided in order that you can realise your full potential.
